Visitors to Provence are amazed by the vast collection of well preserved Roman monuments that are to be found here. Provence was the first area in France to be colonized by the Romans during the 1st century BC. The Romans called their new territory Gaul, and the primitive inhabitants, Gauls. They built major cities, towns, and aqueducts. The former Roman colony city of Arles, on the banks of the Rhone, was an important port of trade.  Nimes was another impressive former Roman colony of 20 000 inhabitants, now its city center is enshrined by some important Roman architecture from that period.  The Pont du Gard, undeniably one of the most impressive of the Roman monuments outside of Rome, remains exquisitely intact.  It has stood for centuries and attests to the amazing endurance of Roman architecture.  The Pont du Gard, Arles city center, and the Maison Carre in Nimes, are UNESCO listed monuments and not to be missed on your visit to this area.
