The Southern Rhone wine area

The Southern Rhone is dotted with numerous beautiful wine villages; perhaps the most well known being Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas. The Côtes du Rhone appellation offers delicious red, white, and rosé wines at accessible prices, and with over 100,000 acres in production, there are more than enough wineries to visit in several days of touring. This area is best known for its jammy, rich, red grape varietal blend, comprised principally of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre.

This delicious, full-bodied wine can be cellared for 10 – 15 years.

The picturesque village of Chateauneuf-du-Pape is the most popular of all the cru wine villages in the region, and has a very interesting history, originating back to the early 14th Century when the Papal seat was based in Avignon. Chateauneuf-du-Pape literally translates – Pope’s new castle, as this was the location of one of the Pope’s summer homes. This now ruined chateau is perched at the top of the historic medieval village. It is the Popes in fact, who did much to promote winemaking in this region. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is known for its special terroir, with its vines thriving in soil containing heavy river stones, sand, and clay.

I can't think of a better way to spend a day in Provence than by visiting Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas, enjoying lunch under a vine-covered, shaded terrace or a picnic next to the vineyard...  A day like this can only be topped off by a stop at the nearby cru Rosè producing villages of Lirac or Tavel, or one of my personal favorites, Baumes du Venise, to taste the heavenly delicate and sweet muscat wine, a delight to wine lovers.
